Question of the week #1

(Since my baby is actually taking a nap while not physically connected to me, I'm a little giddy with the freedom. Sorry about the multiple posts.)

Since we haven't had much traffic on here recently, how about having a question of the week every week? I like Luke's about Millerisms. I am also experiencing winter wanderlust -- feel like I should be going to the tropics somehow. Instead I am enjoying the book set in Sri Lanka that Martha gave me for Christmas and reading old travel magazines. So how about creating your own Top 5/Top 10 travel lists, on any topic you choose. Examples -- My 5 Favorite Cities, 10 Best Meals I've Had While Traveling, 5 Most Breathtaking Spots in the U.S., Top 10 Crazy People I've Met on Public Transportation While Traveling -- you get the idea. I have my own idea for a list and promise to return to post it soon!

  1. Top foods that I associate with places I've lived in for awhile:

1.) Rome: (real) fresh mozzarella & basil, prosciutto, hot bruschetta
2.) Guatemala: fresh hand-slapped corn tortillas
3.) DR: tostones (fried salted plantain nuggets)
4.) Bolivia: this isn't very indigenous, but I had the same fabulous breakfast every morning of tropical fruits with light granola & yogurt - yum. Very fresh fruit.

  2. Top foods that I associate with places I've lived in for awhile: (you will be amazed at the places I have been!)

1.) Rt. 245 West Liberty, OH- cracker soup and omelet (and many more wonderful momma meals)
2.) Goshen College, Goshen IN.- Sunday morning donuts (they were delivered to the dorms- sure hadn't thought about that for a long long time)
3.) Korea- kemche and bolgoke (not sure about that spelling, but it was yummy)
4.) 5867 US Route 68 North- peas-in-a-pot (so named by Russy- basically, I threw everything into a pot, poured on cream of mushroom soup and baked it)
5.) 1471 Co Rd 11- corn on the cob, tomatoes, strawberries...

  3. OK, not that anyone is holding their breath for this, but here's my list:

My Top Five Most Alarming Travel Experiences

    1. Rwanda -- driving through the mountains with an insane driver, we took a curve too fast and the van flipped completely around -- fortunately on one of the only sections where there was a shoulder. Which goes to prove my theory that no matter what other dangers you are facing (a volcano, rebel soldiers, and potentially exploding lake in this case), it's traffic that will get you.

    2. Border of El Salvador and Guatemala -- Got ripped off by black market money changers and left behind when the bus left for San Salvador. We literally ran after it, jumped aboard, and begged the (not very friendly) driver to stop for the friends who were still getting their passports stamped.

    3. Somewhere over East Africa -- Extreme turbulence, at a time when I was freaked out about flying anyway. I was holding onto the seat in front of me and being thrown into the guy next to me, who was trying to pretend he wasn't scared.

    4. Congo -- The airport there is pure chaos -- it's impossible to tell who actually works there, and everyone is demanding bribes. Some guy grabbed my passport and started to walk away, and I had to sweet talk him into giving it back for a minute. (Of course, I kept it after that.)

    5. (Tie) The Costa Rica Bus Incidents -- Approaching a bridge in a chicken bus, thinking "that bridge looks none too stable ... I'd hate for it to collapse." Followed by the bridge collapsing and having to climb out the back of the bus, which was hanging precariously.

And then later, being on another bus when a disgruntled man on horseback rode up and fired a couple shots into the windshield.

  4. Oh my word- Rachel Beth Miller Moreland- I don't think I've ever heard some of those stories. Those stories are the very reason why mothers spend alot of time praying for their children!

  5. Hey, I'm playing catch-up.

    5 Favorite Cities

    1. Rome: for its beauty, sheer magnitude and historical weight, incredible food and late night dining, memories with Luke and anticipation for future visits (with Adam!)
    2. Berlin: for the city that has left me with the most baggage, for its raw state but unbelievable energy
    3. New York: for being the ultimate urban mecca in my mind, I also love the bagels and Central Park
    4. Chicago: for being my home, the people, the lake, the parks, the museums, for letting me live my urban dream
    5. ... I think this one is yet to be discovered... maybe London for its grit and british accents, but I would have to go there again to be reminded...
